Kaninë Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Kaninës, is located in the village of Kaninë, Vlorë County, Albania. Its origins date back to the 3rd century BCE, when it served as an ancient settlement of the Amantes tribe. In the 4th century CE, the Byzantines transformed it into a fortress town. The castle was reconstructed during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, between 527 and 565 CE. It later became a stronghold for the Angevin Kingdom of Albania in the 13th century and served as the center of the Principality of Valona in the 14th century. The castle is situated on a three-pronged hill on the side of Shushica Mountain, 380 meters above sea level. Its strategic location offers panoramic views of the Bay of Vlorë, central Vlora, and the surrounding countryside.
Key architectural features include:
• Three gates:
• The first gate connects the stronghold with Varoshin.
• The second gate, on the west side, links the fortress with the Vlora road.
• The third gate, located in the south, connects with Varoshi i Vogël and leads to the inner fortress.
• Streets within the fortress are uneven, with ascents and streams.
• The ruins include remnants of fortification walls, and there are traces of a mosque built by Sultan Mehmet, featuring a tile-covered roof and a minaret.
Kaninë Castle has played a significant role throughout its history:
• Initially serving as a military post for the Roman Empire.
• Functioned as a stronghold and administrative center during the Byzantine, Angevin, and Ottoman periods.
• Became the heart of the Principality of Valona in the 14th century.
• The castle endured destruction by the Venetians in 1690, bombings during World War I, and the Italian invasion in 1920.
Kaninë Castle remains a prominent tourist attraction despite its ruined state. Visitors are drawn to its historical significance, breathtaking views of the Bay of Vlorë and the surrounding landscapes, and the serene atmosphere of the fortress. Its proximity to St. Mary’s Monastery and the modern village of Kaninë enhances its appeal as a key destination in the Vlorë region.
Kaninë Castle embodies Albania’s rich cultural and historical heritage. As a testament to the nation’s ancient civilizations, medieval powers, and strategic importance, the castle holds immense cultural and economic value. Preserving this site is vital not only to honor its historical significance but also to boost tourism and foster appreciation for Albania’s architectural legacy among future generations.
