The castle, which is believed to have been built in the fourth century BC, is the crown of the ancient city of Berat.
It is located at the highest point of the historical center and is one of the few monuments of the medieval period in Albania.
In the century VII-V BC, as an important strategic point, it was transformed into a fortress city with walls reaching a length of up to 1400 m. Historical sources testify that since this year Berat fortress has been the object of various attacks.
By the Romans, it was called the Fortress of Arbërve, while, in 216 BC, it was mentioned with the ancient name of Antipatrea.
Surrounded by stone walls, with 24 watchtowers, Berat Castle is one of the most beautiful in Albania.
The great gate, built on gigantic stones, shows a rare solemn silhouette to any visitor who sets foot in the Fort for the first time.
From its fortified courtyard you can see the whole city of Berat, the river Osum and the old bridge of Gorica.
Inside the castle there are several churches, which have started to be built since the century. XV, such as: the church of St. Todri, the church of St. Mary of Vllaherna, also the “Sleep of St. Mary” Cathedral.
As in no other castle, life within its ancient walls still goes on. In this monument today there are houses, bars and restaurants, churches and markets, museums and monuments, surrounded by a green and fresh nature.
